Peppermint Grove’s rich history dates back to 1835, when innkeeper John Butler received the grant to 150 acres of land bound by the Swan River. In the years following, the land parcel saw several owners before being purchased by three men named George Leake, Charles Crossland and Alexander Forrest in 1891. It was then that subdivision of the land began, and the area embarked on a transformation into the prosperous suburb that it is today. Aptly named Peppermint Grove was once a natural oasis, with its foliage including peppermint trees, tuarts, jarrahs, red gum, banksia, native pines, and hollies. Today, the suburb is recognisable for its leafy green streets and distinctive federation architecture, a reminder of its fascinating past.
