Suburb History
A look back at Claremont’s rich history
One of Perth’s oldest suburbs, situated west of the city centre, Claremont has become one of the most recognized suburbs in Perth, while still maintaining its unique heritage feel. Claremont was known by the Nyungar Aboriginal people as the place with abundant waterfowl, bountiful fishing and lavish spring water.
In 1862 a state school was built and a church shortly afterwards From there the community grew along the riverside, around what is now known as Victoria Avenue. Not long after, Christ Church Grammar was built, and in 1881 the railway line from Perth to Fremantle was built. With it a station was constructed and the area became known as Claremont soon after.
